Kate Elizabeth Bentley
I like drawing

23-25 mars 2007
åpning fredag 23. mars kl 20-22
åpent lørdag og søndag kl 12-16

Kate Elizabeth Bentley was born in Buckinghamshire, England, in 1984. She is currently in her final year of study at Wimbledon College of Art in London.

Miss Bentley has decided that she will not change the world. She attempted to do so for a while by encouraging people not to use plastic bags. She herself continues to avoid using plastic bags at all cost but stopped preaching to others after someone told her that it was really annoying. With the time gained from abandoning her efforts to save the world Miss Bentley has been able to concentrate fully on amusement.

Miss Bentley attempts to combine all the things that amuse her into something that resembles art. She really likes drawing and this exhibition is dedicated to that activity which she so cherishes. Her drawings celebrate whimsy, frivolity and inanity. She draws things she likes and things she likes to draw. If you want to get spiritual you could say that drawing is a kind of meditation. If you don’t, it can be seen as pure recreation.

Miss Bentleys work usually has a critical edge or exhibits traces of the artists existential musings. These elements are perhaps not as pronounced in the work shown here. It appears as if she is taking some time out from cynicism to indulge in a lighter form of joy. The drawings do, however, originate from the question that sits behind all her work, ‘what shall I do with all this time?’
